My Friend Steve and the Prayer Conference

This past weekend I had the privilege of attending the NAD Prayer Conference held in Monterey, California. I was also able to spend some time on either side of the Conference with my friend, Steve Newton (and his family) in the Bay Area.

Steve Newton Update: It was wonderful to re-connect with Steve. He was my best friend from Academy, my college roommate, a partner in many ministry experiences, and best man in my wedding (as I was in his). We had not seen each other in about 25 years but picked up where we had left off.

He was in good spirits and is healing well from his accident. While he will not walk again, he and his family are working hard to allow him to be mobile in a powered wheel chair – including modifications to their home and a specially equipped minivan he will eventually be able to drive.

He has a ways to go yet and I’m sure it will take him (and his family) through some dark and difficult times. They continually look toward Jesus and I know He will give them what they need. Please continue to remember them in your prayers.

Prayer Conference Report: I have to admit I was a little skeptical about the conference - it’s hard to create a meaningful experience focused on prayer for 750 people. But it turned out to be a wonderful experience! The speakers were great and we felt the Holy Spirit working in our lives drawing us closer to Jesus.

Much of the Conference will be available for viewing online. When ready, I will be sure you have a link to it so you can enjoy and learn from some of the presentations as well.

Prayer is a funny thing, it is one of the essential ingredients in a relationship with God but it is hard to do. It tends to remind us that we don’t have what it takes to change our lives and to really make a difference in other’s lives – that power comes as a gift from God. Prayer is what connects us to God’s power at work in our lives!

In many respects, prayer is like breathing. While we are made to do lots of things other than breathe, we can only do those things as we continuously breathe. If we’re not breathing, nothing else matters; but when we are breathing the possibilities are endless!

If we are not praying, all our busyness is ineffective; it does not really accomplish anything of eternal value – our spiritual life is dying. When we are praying, the possibilities are endless! Consider these words of Jesus, recorded in John 14 and 15:

I tell you the truth: whoever believes in Me will be able to do what I have done, but they will do even greater things, because I will return to be with the Father. Whatever you ask for in My name, I will do it so that the Father will get glory from the Son. Let Me say it again: if you ask for anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, obey the commandments I have given you. (John 14:12-15, the Voice)

If you abide in Me and My voice abides in you, anything you ask will come to pass for you. Your abundant growth and your faithfulness as My followers will bring glory to the Father. (John 15:7-8, the Voice)

What a powerful promise this is! Why are we so reluctant to act on it? It seems to me when we say “no” to the invitation from the God of the Universe to come into His presence we reject Him – and this is the essence of sin; living apart from God. Failing to pray in essence keeps us separated from God.

I want to be connected to God, don’t you? My prayer for each of us is that God will draw us into an ever-deepening life of prayer. I pray for Him to teach us how to be connected with Him and as we become more connected, to more perfectly reflect to others the love He gives to us!

I invite you to join me in this journey of prayer!
